October-December. Rainy season is from Dec-April, so while it’s still warm, expect regular showers & even the odd tropical cyclone.

  • Our Advice

Holidays in Mauritius are predominantly resort based, so opt for half or full board. It’s well worth booking a boat trip so that you can see the beauty of the island and visit great little coves and beaches for snorkelling & lunch.

The Place

Nestled in the Trou d’Eau Douce bay on the exclusive eastern shores of Mauritius, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, is a luxurious private hideaway that is great for solo travellers, couples or families who are looking for a five-star hotel with an award-winning spa.

The resort is a 50 minute drive from Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam International Airport and has 34 acres of gardens and 4 kilometres of beach split over six white sandy beaches (it offers uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean from all of its rooms) all with beautiful shallow, clear water to swim in.

To further complete its island paradise persona, the resort also has its very own private island, Ilôt Mangénie, where you can relax on the secluded beach, have a spa treatment or lunch under the palm trees and enjoy its untouched natural beauty.

The Rooms

All of the rooms here have ocean views, so it’s really about choosing the right size and configuration for you. We stayed in a one bedroom Frangipani Junior Suite with balcony (the rooms are all built in two-storey blocks so you can either choose a room on the second floor with a balcony or one on the ground floor with direct beach access). For families, there are rooms with twin double beds, larger suites with 1-2 bedrooms and separate living areas or 3 bedroom private villas.

The Spa

Located in its own dedicated building, Chi the spa is a bastion of calm. With eight treatment rooms, each designed based on local Mauritian culture, like other Shangri-La locations, it offers treatments based upon Ayurveda. You can also book to have treatments on their private island, Ilot Mangénie – nothing beats a massage with the backdrop of lapping waves.

In terms of products, the hotel has its own spa garden, so treatments are designed to show off their herbal creations. They also offer treatments designed by Carita and Decléor.

Every quarter, they host different local and international wellness coaches to bring a whole new dimension to our treatments, so its worth checking who will be in residence when you visit.

The Treatments

The treatments here are all sublime and based around the principles of Ayurveda. All start with a short sequence of guided breathwork that helps you relax. After a long flight, we’d recommend booking in for one of their packages to make you feel like new. The 3-hour Healing Energy of Nature Retreat includes a freshly harvested coconut oil scrub, 60 minute massage and 60 minute facial. While the 2.5 hour Journey to Mauritius includes a Coco Hair Treatment, 90 minute Sugar Cane Body Scrub & Aloe Vera Body Wrap Combo, 60 minute Relaxing Aroma Massage with Eye & Face Mask and a Hydrating Hand & Foot Treatment.

The Gym

By the spa entrance is the gym, which is a large, extremely well-equipped fitness space where personal trainers are on standby to help you design a session or guide you through brilliant stretching classes. They also offer amazing sunrise and sunset yoga sessions on the beach, which are well worth a try during your stay.

The resort also offers a huge range of water sports, bocce ball, mini football, beach soccer, beach volleyball, archery initiation, boxing training, boot camp, a jogging track and aqua-gym lessons, nature trails and e-cycling. There are 4 artificial tennis courts where resident tennis coach Lukas Skowronski, winner of the UBP National Championship 2019 and 2020 is on site for tennis sessions, geared for all ages and levels.

The Fitness Centre is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Verdict

Shangri-La Le Touessrok is one of the best resorts in Mauritius and a destination that has something for everyone. The food is fabulous, the rooms luxurious and the service attentive and caring. Whether your ideal break involves lots of activities, requires numerous ways to entertain the whole family or simply lying under a swaying palm tree drinking in the turquoise waters. From a spa point of view, the treatments are synonymous with the Shangri-La brand – considered, luxurious and rejuvenating – while the fitness offering here enables guests to either maintain their fitness regimes, get back into working out or try new forms of exercise that they wouldn’t usually have access to.
